This course will provide students with a broad overview of contemporary thinking in psychodynamic theory and research.  Theoretical understanding informs our clinical responsiveness.  Participants will learn a range of ways of understanding clinical interventions thereby increasing their capacity for empathy, optimal responsiveness and deepening the therapeutic process.

Self psychology is a form of contemporary psychoanalytic treatment which focuses on the relationship between and individual and his or her surroundings.  Empathic listening, in the spirit of inquiry, is used in an effort to understand a person's experience.  The meanings these experiences hold for an individual unfold in the course of therapy, with particular attention paid to the experience of the clinical relationship.  With an emphasis on creating safety, exploration of the vulnerability that results from unmet needs enables the previously arrested development of the self to resume in a healthy way.
